Style Errors

“i.e.” is short for “id est” – “that is”“e.g.” is short for “exempli gratia” – “for example”As a general rule of thumb:  Use “i.e.” when you want to briefly clarify your statement or state it in other words. 

Correct use of “i.e”: Different types of medications (i.e. general antibiotics prescribed by your doctor) are used to treat common bacterial infections. 

As a general rule of thumb:  Use “e.g.” when you want to give an example of something. 

Correct use of “e.g.”: Different types of medications, e.g., penicillin are used to treat common bacterial infections. 

* Note – remember to type e.g. and i.e. – NOT eg and ie.
